Locks of Love Plaza Blow-Out 2 a huge success!

Area gymnasts have lots of love for Locks of Love. Thursday, May 24th was not a typical morning at Three Rivers Gymnastics in Wahpeton, ND. What started out a personal gesture ended with 16 gymnasts and 1 coach cutting their hair for Locks of Love on national television. Patty Moses, Gym Coordinator, had invited her gymnastics girls to grow out their hair for Locks of Love this winter to donate as a group. The word spread and a large group of very generous girls “flipped” over the idea.

Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides recipients with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece made entirely from donated human hair. The vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue. Most of the applicants suffer from an autoimmune condition called alopecia areata for which there is no known cause or cure. Others have suffered severe burns or injuries or endured radiation treatment to the brain stem or other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss.

The organization, which began operation in 1998, has helped over 2000 children since its first year of operation. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive as a result of the national publicity that Locks of Love receives in newspaper, magazines, and television programs. Children comprise over 80 percent of the donors, making this a charity where children have an opportunity to help children.

Through the link for Locks of Love, http://www.LocksofLove.org, NBC Today Show was contacted about the gymnast’s donation idea. The gymnasts postponed their plans to cut their beautiful locks with hopes of being selected by the Today Show for the 2nd Annual Plaza Blowout show for Locks of Love. Plans quickly came together for the “Big Chop!” Each gymnast was accompanied by a stylist from Centre Square Salon for the initial cut, live on the Today Show. The girls waved their freshly cut ponies with smiles, cheering, and a few tears from family and friends watching from the sidelines.

The gymnasts posed for several pictures with their great new summer styles with their coach. The group donated over 200 inches in hair.

Local Group Efforts Benefit Locks of Love: Live Remote on Today Show!!
5.15.07 - On Thursday, May 24th at 6:00 AM, a group of 17 from Three Rivers Gymnastics in Wahpeton will be having their hair cut for Locks of Love. The Today show will be in town to cover it live. This has been in the works all winter, with everyone growing their hair out to get ready for the big event. The donors will gather at the Three Rivers Gymnastics for a before picture and then have their ponytails cut off. After the pictures are finished, the girls will have their hair finished and styled at Centre Square Salon. Five of the girls have already had their ponytails cut off and will bring them in for the group’s after picture.
